Emily Hedegard is a double major in English and communications with a minor in writing at the University of New England. She is editor-in-chief of UNE's student paper, The Bolt.
Emily has previously interned for various local papers and academic journals, including Saco Bay News, Portland Press Herald and Across the Disciplines. She is a lifelong Mainer who loves to walk local trails (the Eastern Trail being her favorite), garden and practice yoga in her free time.
Cross-training staff, incorporating more independent providers, and expanding training in rural areas are solutions proposed by providers and researchers.
On average, rural Mainers whose closest hospital doesn’t have a birthing unit are now driving 45 minutes one-way to the nearest birthing hospital, according to a recent analysis.
