MCPIR Social Media and Community Guidelines

The Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting publishes The Maine Monitor as a free digital publication to provide people across the entire state of Maine with equitable access to the in-depth, nonpartisan news they deserve.

Our social media pages serve as an extension of our journalism and are free, public sources of information and news for our communities. We welcome feedback, discussion, and constructive criticism on our social media platforms.

We expect that people will:

1) Engage thoughtfully with our reporting,
2) Share their perspectives and experiences, and
3) Interact respectfully and constructively with our organization and community.

Our social media platforms are not a place for defamatory, profane, discriminatory, or threatening comments. This includes:

Personal attacks and harassment: No name-calling, hate speech, bullying, or harassment of individuals, including other commenters and subjects of stories

Obscene or profane language: No vulgar, offensive, or inappropriate language

Commercial promotion or spam: No advertisements, self-promotion, solicitation or repetitive spam content

Impersonation: No pretending to be another person or entity

Off-topic content or misinformation: Comments must be relevant to the post and free from conspiracy theories or misinformation

Plagiarism and unauthorized content: No copying and pasting full articles or copyrighted materials without permission

Criminal, violent, graphic or inciteful content: No content that promotes, encourages, or depicts criminal activity, violence, graphic imagery, or anything that could incite harm or unlawful behavior

Comments that violate these guidelines will be hidden or deleted, and repeat offenders may be blocked from our page. The Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting and The Maine Monitor reserve the right to:

  • Remove comments that violate our policies without notice,
  • Close comment threads that devolve into disruptive and/or dangerous behavior, and
  • Block automated bots or spam accounts.

Users who repeatedly violate the policy will be banned and/or blocked from engaging on our social media pages. If a user believes they have been banned unfairly, they may submit an appeal to our editorial team for review by completing the contact form on our website.
