Maine crowned 10 boys’ and girls’ teams as state basketball champions in five classes earlier this month. In this episode of Chasing Maine, we showcase Gray-New Gloucester High School, which won the Gold Ball in the boys’ Class A division.

With a win over Hampden Academy on March 2, the Gray-New Gloucester Patriots brought home a state title for the first time since 1975. Coach Ian McCarthy — in his first year as head coach for the Patriots — spoke to us about what made the team so strong and what it felt like to win at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland.

Chasing Maine is a video series that explores Maine from a distinct visual perspective. Join veteran Maine journalist and storyteller Roger McCord as he chases the people, places and things that define the unique character of the Pine Tree State. Follow the Chasing Maine playlist on YouTube.
