The Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting (MCPIR), which publishes The Maine Monitor, is a nonprofit news organization reporting on issues of public interest in the state of Maine. Founded in 2009, MCPIR has grown in size and impact, employing 19 and publishing daily and weekly newsletters. We have quadrupled our staff and increased our newsletter subscribers by more than 200% over the last four years. In addition to The Maine Monitor, which produces critical investigative and in-depth accountability journalism on issues of statewide importance, since November 2025, we produce Monitor Local, a division of The Maine Monitor focused on providing civic news for rural communities across Maine. The Maine Monitor’s reporting is widely respected for its depth and insights, winning local and national awards.

We are seeking a Membership Coordinator to join our revenue team and help grow and sustain the journalism of The Maine Monitor that informs and connects communities across the state.

NOTE: The membership coordinator position is an exempt position. The position is included within a bargaining unit with terms and conditions of employment governed by a collective bargaining agreement.

About the role

Membership is central to our model. The relationships we build with readers and supporters make our journalism possible. This role sits at the core of that work — translating engagement into long-term support and ensuring that our membership program is thoughtful, effective and built to grow.

We are looking for someone who, in partnership with and reporting to the Development Director, takes ownership of the member experience — cultivating donor relationships, executing fundraising campaigns, managing membership systems and creating engagement opportunities that keep members connected to our mission.

The ideal candidate is both analytical and execution-oriented — someone who can work comfortably with data and systems while also thinking creatively about how to engage and retain supporters by building a community around our work. This is a role for someone who values precision, takes pride in strong execution and understands how operational excellence contributes to larger organizational success.

You will be joining a collaborative team committed to the long-term sustainability of our nonprofit news mission. We value colleagues who are creative, disciplined, detail-driven, and generous teammates who contribute to a strong team culture.

This is a multi-faceted role that combines strategy, execution and systems management. Success requires the ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high standard of accuracy and follow-through.

The position requires periodic in-person presence at the organization’s office in Augusta, but otherwise can be done remotely in Maine.

Specifically, this role is responsible for

Cultivating donor relationships and creating engagement opportunities:

  • Communicating with potential members and existing members about opportunities to support The Maine Monitor
  • Conceiving, planning and executing member engagement activities (in person and virtual).
  • Supporting members who give on a recurring basis with management of their recurring donations.
  • Working with the development director to set and execute membership goals to drive growth.
  • Fulfilling membership benefits, including quarterly member zooms, newsletters, merchandise, and yearly public recognition.
  • Organizing and sending annual giving statements.
  • Maintaining a membership engagement calendar.

Executing fundraising campaigns:

  • Designing, coordinating, and executing digital and mail fundraising appeals.
  • Drafting fundraising messaging.
  • Conducting detailed analysis of fundraising results and trends.
  • Gift entry and preparing and completing appreciation and  acknowledgement for membership gifts.
  • Conceiving and designing social media engagement around fundraising, working with the outreach unit.

Managing membership systems:

  • Maintaining members’ records across systems, ensuring accurate and updated information.
  • Maintaining and updating requests for support across Maine Monitor platforms and products.
  • Tracking giving data and preparing reports for leadership and the board and to fulfill grant requirements.

Other tasks as assigned, including:

  • Assisting fiscally-sponsored newsrooms with individual donor fundraising strategies.
  • Tracking and cataloguing member feedback and testimonials and examples of impact shared by members.

Qualifications we’re looking for:

  • 2+ years experience in nonprofit fundraising, membership program management, marketing or other client-facing roles. Demonstrated involvement in campaign execution or donor engagement work preferred.
  • Exceptional relationship-building skills and a demonstrated ability to connect with people and communicate effectively about an organization and its mission.
  • Excellent attention to detail, with a demonstrated track record of accuracy in data management, record-keeping, and donor or client communications.
  • Proficiency with CRM platforms preferred, including experience maintaining data, executing campaigns; experience with Active Campaign or similar email tools.
  • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to interpret data and translate insights into practical campaign emails or engagement improvements.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience drafting donor or client-facing communications such as emails, appeals or updates.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in conceiving community engagement activities and programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines independently, with strong organization, follow-through and attention to detail.
  • Ability to take ownership of projects from planning through execution, including managing details, solving problems and ensuring timely completion.
  • Openness to learning and experimenting with various tools to improve efficiency and outcomes.
  • A collaborative, team-oriented approach and a genuine commitment to the Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting’s mission of nonpartisan, community-centered journalism.
