Derek Mitchell talks democracy and international security

Hear from the president of the National Democratic Institute

This month, the Mid-Coast Forum on Foreign Relations hosted Derek Mitchell to discuss democracy and international security.

The Mid-Coast Forum on Foreign Relations seeks to promote study and discussion of the development, formulation, and implementation of United States foreign policies by means of a program of speakers, the organization of discussion and study groups, and the production and distribution of relevant materials.

Mitchell became president of the National Democratic Institute in 2018, a role he currently holds.

From 2012-2016, Mitchell served as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar (Burma). He was America’s first ambassador to the country in 22 years.

From 2011-2012, he served as the U.S. Department of State’s first Special Representative and Policy Coordinator for Burma, with the rank of ambassador.
