The show offers a behind-the-scenes look at recent Maine Monitor reporting.

The radio show airs live on WERU 89.8 FM the first Thursday of every month.

This month, editor Kate Cough was joined by Maine Monitor environmental reporter Emmett Gartner to talk about his recent series on dams in Maine.

In the episode, Gartner talks about the initial idea for the stories and walks through the months-long reporting process, detailing how he spoke to dozens of residents, experts and officials and reviewed hundreds of pages of documents in order to gain an understanding of the past, present and future of the state’s dams.

With the average Maine dam built over a century ago, more and more dam owners have to confront what to do with these deteriorating structures, while state regulators have little power or funding to enforce their own rules.
