On Monday, July 27, 2026, a group of non-supervisory staff at The Maine Monitor met with senior managers and disclosed their intention to form a union. In response, the board of directors of the Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting and I convened and confirmed the importance of preserving thoughtful collaboration with our employees.
The board unanimously agreed to voluntarily recognize The NewsGuild of Maine as the exclusive bargaining agent for our non-supervisory employees.
The next steps will follow a well-defined legal process. While this process is underway, everyone at The Maine Monitor remains fully focused on our work of delivering insightful public interest reporting on the issues impacting Maine and keeping it free for all to access and use.
We look forward to fostering a productive, respectful labor-management environment with The NewsGuild of Maine.
Every staff member here will continue working toward our mission goals: holding institutions accountable and making sure our neighbors across Maine have the information they need to participate in civic life and understand what’s happening in the places they call home.
We believe informed communities are stronger communities. That belief built this newsroom, and it’s what our staff show up for every day — through this process and beyond it.
