Derrick Z. Jackson is a periodic freelance contributor to The Maine Monitor. He is a fellow with the Union of Concerned Scientists.

He is co-author with Steve Kress of Project Puffin and The Puffin Plan. The latter book was the 2021 winner in Teen Nonfiction from the Independent Book Publishers Association.

A former Boston Globe columnist, Derrick has been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and National Headliners Award. He has earned recognition from the National Association of Black Journalists, American Society of Journalists and Authors, National Society of Newspaper Columnists, Outdoor Writers Association of America, Scripps Howard Award, and Maine Press Association.
