The Maine Monitor and its publisher, the Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, are pleased to welcome a new addition to the independent, nonprofit news organization.
Matt Junker will cover elections and government. In this new beat, Junker will be working to help our readers unpack the ins and outs of Maine’s electoral system while keeping up with decision-making at the state and federal levels.
Junker comes to The Monitor after more than seven years at the Bangor Daily News, where he served in multiple roles including deputy opinion editor and sports editor. Before the BDN, Junker was a weekly and daily reporter in southern and central Maine. He’s spent years writing about the policy-making and people that help shape Maine, from select board meetings to the State House, and he is excited to continue that work.
Before becoming a journalist, Junker spent four years in Washington, D.C. as a staffer for U.S. Senator Angus King. That experience not only cemented his belief in the power of public policy, but also emphasized the critically important role that transparency plays in an accountable government. He moved back home to Maine and became a journalist because he wanted to help the public navigate the sometimes murky world of government, and sees his job with The Monitor as an extension of that years-long effort to inform Mainers.
Junker grew up in Kennebunkport and now lives in Brewer. When he’s not spending time writing about Maine’s institutions and leaders, you can probably find him somewhere in the Maine outdoors hiking, camping or skiing.
